Golf Course: Important Safety Information

Golf Course: Important Safety Information

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF RISK.

The golf course at SCSH offers a challenging nine-hole golfing experience suitable for golfers of all abilities. SCSH believes that golf should be accessible to everyone, but it also comes with inherent risks. The golf course is compact and many holes run parallel to each other and are played in opposing directions which can lead to errant golf balls landing on your fairway or near you. There are notices around the golf course providing advice as to how to play that hole and when to give way to other golfers. Please always follow the advice.

INSURANCE:

  • All golfers should ensure that they are adequately insured in respect of the risks involved with the playing of golf.
  • All users are held responsible if their wayward shot hits someone or someone’s property. No matter how good your game is or how careful you are, playing golf always comes with the risk of an accident.

GENERAL GUIDE:

  • Before you take a practice swing please ensure that it is safe to do so and check your immediate surrounding area.
  • Before teeing off please make yourself aware of other golfers on the course. Do not tee off until any visible golfer acknowledges you and your intention to hit the ball.
  • If you hit an errant ball you must shout out ‘Fore’ immediately to warn other users and ideally shout the direction that your golf ball is travelling, i.e. Fore! Right!
  • There are several water hazards on the golf course. Players must not attempt to retrieve balls if they cannot get a safe, firm foothold from the gently sloping side. Players should use a special ball retrieval to remove balls safely from the water. Please ensure that another player is close by to assist in case of an accident.
  • There are four golf holes that run parallel to the lane known as La Blinerie Lane. Trees have been planted to help protect pedestrians and vehicles using this lane. Nonetheless players should immediately shout ‘Fore’ if their tee shot is heading in that direction.
  • If the golf ball comes to rest in this lane, and it is being retrieved, extreme caution must be taken regarding passing traffic.
  • When crossing the lane from hole 4 to hole 5 and again from hole 7 to hole 8 please take extreme caution when doing so.
  • You are advised to adopt caution and be aware of your surroundings when close to any trees on the course particularly during windy or other adverse weather conditions. While branches considered to be dangerous are removed whenever possible SCSH cannot be held responsible for natural conditions prevailing at any particular time.
  • Players are expected to have sufficient knowledge of the game of golf and to observe and abide by the Rules and Etiquette of Golf.
  • Players should be aware of their capabilities.
  • Persons under 12 years of age must be accompanied on the course by an adult who will, at all times, be responsible for the person’s conduct. SCSH have no responsibility on their behalf.
  • Players are particularly advised not to undertake strenuous physical activity for which they might be medically unfit and SCSH will not in any way be responsible for any harm which may come to a user or as a result of their undertaking within SCSH, any activity which is beyond their physical capability. If in any doubt golfers are advised to have a medical consultation and assessment before commencing exercise.

EXPOSURE TO PESTICIDES AND FERTILISERS:

  • You are advised to avoid oral contact with anything that comes into contact with the golf course (including trees, sand, soil, and grass); particularly when caution signs indicate that chemicals have recently been sprayed on the course.
  • It is essential that hands are washed as soon as possible after play.

FOG, THUNDER AND LIGHTNING:

  • If SCSH decides that weather conditions are such that it is unsafe to play, the course will be closed and a player must abide by this decision. A siren will be sounded to warn those players on the course as follows:-
  • One prolonged note of the siren: Discontinue play immediately! Players must leave the course and find safe shelter immediately. If you are near Longueville Driving Range this may be used.
  • In the event of thunder and or lightning players must not return to play until at least half an hour after the last lightning or thunder has taken place and the siren has sounded.

Sheltering under trees is extremely dangerous and must be avoided. If thunder and lightning is close by clubs should be left and not carried to reduce the chances of being hit.

STONES AND OBJECTS ON THE COURSE:

  • From time to time stones may appear on the surface of the turf, especially on the 1st and 2nd fairways. These stones are identified by white paint.
  • Please check particularly in the rough before playing a shot to ensure that injury from stones does not occur.

ACCIDENTS AND EMERGENCIES:

  • All employees of SCSH are trained in First Aid, Basic Life Support and the use of the Automated External Defibrillator (AED). In the event of an accident, a First Aid box is located in the Reception Kiosk. The AED is located at the front of the Reception Kiosk.

INCIDENT REPORTING:

  • All incidents must be reported to the Manager, in the first instance or in his/her absence the reception staff and a detailed entry made into the Incident Book located in Reception.

SCSH LIABILITY:

  • SCSH will not be liable in any way for the loss of, or damage to, the property of members or guests or for the personal injury to, or death of, any member or guest, except to the extent that such loss, damage, personal injury, or death arises from the willful act, neglect or default of SCSH or any of its employees or agents.

Guide to 'On Course' Conduct

The golfer wants to play without interruption and the greenkeepers want to get on with the job free of 'Hazards'. These two objectives can be in conflict, hence these guidelines. St Clements Golf & Sports Centre (SCGSC) owes a duty of care to its staff, which means that the working environment must be as risk free as possible.

COMPLAINTS:

  • No golfer shall reprimand or instruct the greenkeepers.
  • Golfer's complaints must be made in writing to the Manager.

GUIDES TO 'PACE OF PLAY':

  • 'Play at a good pace and Keep Up!
  • SCSH has established pace of play guidelines that all players should follow.
  • It is a group's responsibility to keep up with the group in front. If it loses a clear hole and it is delaying the group behind, it should invite the group behind to play through, irrespective of the number of players in that group.
  • 'Ready golf!' is a term which indicates that players should play when they are ready to do so and applies EVERYWHERE on the golf course - on the tee, on the fairway and on the green.
  • When playing on or near the putting green, you should leave your bags and carts in such a position as will enable quick movement off the green and towards the next tee. When the hole has been completed, players should immediately leave the putting green before marking the scores.

LOST BALLS:

  • If a player believes the ball may be lost, to save time, they should play a provisional ball.
  • A ball is lost if not found in three minutes after the player begins to search for it. If a ball is lost, the player must take a stroke and distance relief by adding one penalty stroke and playing another ball from where the previous stroke was made (even if this means walking back to the tee box!)
  • If a player consistently disregards these guidelines, SCSH will take appropriate action against the offending player. This is considered justifiable in terms of protecting the interests of the majority of players who wish to play in accordance with these guidelines.

DRESS CODE:

  • Tailored shorts, trousers or skirts are all acceptable.
  • Soft spiked shoes. Note: In the event of a player not having golf shoes, smart trainers will be accepted at the Rangers discretion.
  • Collared, polo and round-necked T-shirts will be acceptable and must be worn at all times.
  • Mobile phones may only be taken on the course in 'silent' mode.
  • Green fee members to show their green fee membership card.

INSURANCE:

  • All golfers must ensure that they are adequately insured in respect of the risks involved with playing of golf. It is recommended that golfers should be insured against the unlikely event of them being injured or causing injury or damage to someone else's property as a result of an errant shot. Every golfer needs insurance and everyone should remember that it is a golf course and never take on a shot that may endanger someone/something. Players are held responsible if their wayward shot hits someone else and causes injury or damage to someone's property. It is recommended that golfers should be insured against the unlikely event of them being injured or causing injury or damage to someone else's property because of an errant shot.
